Natural home remedies are growing in popularity. Thanks to simple, chemical-free, inexpensive treatments lacking side effects, more people are heading to the kitchen instead of the doctor. During our Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) presentations, one of my Kula members presented many of her family’s successful home recipes based on strong Indian roots. Try some of my favorites – from a cure for a restless night to the fix for a coffee-lover’s smile.
Itching, Scratching, Tickling…Oh, My
Mix 6 pressed garlic cloves into a glass of warm (not hot) water and gargle twice daily for 3 days.
Mix 1 teaspoon of mint juice, 1 teaspoon of lime juice, 1 teaspoon of ginger juice and a pinch of black salt. Drink for quick, sweet relief.
Not So Sweet Dreams
Try a handful of tart cherries – fresh, frozen, or dried, or drink a glass of cherry juice before bed. Cherries are one of the few natural foods packed with melatonin, the body’s internal clock and sleep-wake cycle regulator.
In Need Of A Scare
Indulge in 1 tablespoon of peanut butter to quiet hiccups. And hey, if a second tablespoon is calling, go for it!
"There is no remedy for love, but to love more."
Take 5-6 mint leaves and mash or blend them. Apply around eyes as a “mask” for about 20 minutes. Gently wipe off with a cold cloth. The cool sensation of mint will soothe and refresh.
Curse Of The Coffee
Mash 2 strawberries and combine with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Brush teeth with mixture and let sit for 3-5 minutes. Brush again with regular toothpaste. Repeat once a week until desired color is restored.
Mix 1 tablespoon of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of sugar – or more depending on the skin surface. Massage mixture on hands, feet, elbows, face, or any other skin surface desired. The natural exfoliants are gentle on skin and leave it feeling incredibly soft.
A Bird’s Nest
After shampooing, rinse hair thoroughly and pour a mixture of 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 8 ounces of water over hair. Let sit for 1-2 minutes before rinsing completely. Hair will be soft, untangled…and not to mention, dandruff-free.
You have the remedy…head to the kitchen cabinet instead of the medicine cabinet and find a naturally simple cure.
